The site at https://kappa-os.com boots into a desktop rather than loading a page. The desktop is client-rendered as a single route, so what a crawler sees of it is this file and the summary on the home page. What follows is the whole site, described. ## About John Kappa John Kappa is a product designer and builder based in Melbourne, Australia. His background is in branding, UX and web design, across more than two decades. Somewhere along the way the work turned from designing things for other people into making his own — tools, fonts, extensions, experiments. He is now deep into AI: not the hype version, the practical, hands-on, what-can-we-actually-build version. He holds that good design is mostly clarity and simplicity — remove the noise, keep only what matters, make it feel obvious in hindsight — and that the best products are built by people who can think across the whole thing: brand, UX, code, copy, product. Chrome extensions, React apps, iOS and Android, full websites; some take an afternoon and some take months. He is currently a Lead Product Designer and AI specialist, and is open to collaborators who care about craft. ## The site https://kappa-os.com is not a page about an operating system; it is one. It boots, with a progress bar and a POST line, into a desktop with icons, a dock, windows with traffic lights, a file system you can genuinely make a mess of, a Trash that remembers where things came from, undo, Spotlight, keyboard shortcuts, spring-loaded folders and a screensaver. Images dragged in from the host operating system land wherever they are dropped. The design language is monochrome, flat and engineered, with colour only in small functional accents. ## Apps in KAPPA OS - **About** — the long-form piece on John, set like a case study. - **SNAP** — photography, as a WebGL wall of pictures or a dome seen through a lens; both shove around under the cursor. - **Tunes** — a music player, deliberately skeuomorphic: a late-80s deck in brushed aluminium with an amber VFD and keys that travel under the finger. - **kappash** — a terminal, rendered as a phosphor tube with scanlines and a block cursor, with its own COLOR, FONT and SIZE commands. - **Navigator** — a period web browser with tabs, a real full-screen mode and a refused-connection page in the chrome of the era. - **SIGIL** — a certificate press: type a name and it strikes a plate for it, with a serial, a class, an engine-turned rosette and a holographic foil, all of it worked out from the name — so the same name always produces the same plate, and the code on it carries the name back. - **Wallpapers** and **Settings** — the desktop's picture, theme, accent, translucency, window-opening animation and screensaver delay. - **FOURBIE** — a game, taking the whole display. - **Contact** — the card, with a QR code that hands the phone version over. ## Projects - **ClearSlate** — Just a simple Links, Notes and Task tool ## Experiments Smaller things, built and shipped: - [John Kappa](https://johnkappa.com) - [Gifted](https://gifted.vercel.app) - [Point Dots](https://point-dots.vercel.app) - [Nooodes](https://nooodes.xyz) - [Lookbeast](https://lookbeast.com) - [DCS Tactical Reference](https://dcs-tactical-reference.vercel.app) - [Inventory Tetris](https://inventory-tetris.vercel.app) - [KAPPA OS](https://kappa-os.com) - [Archaeological Greece](https://archaeological-greece.vercel.app) - [Dither Me](https://dither-me.vercel.app) - [Mooodbored](https://mooodbored.vercel.app) ## Photography - Japan — 1 photograph - Greece — 7 photographs - Home — 2 photographs - Street — 2 photographs - 3D Type — 10 photographs - Hellenic House — 13 photographs - 3D Art — 24 photographs ## Pages - [KAPPA OS — the desktop](https://kappa-os.com/) — the portfolio itself. - [Contact](https://kappa-os.com/contact) — a card built for a phone, reached by QR code from inside the OS. - [Design system](https://kappa-os.com/design-system) — the working vocabulary of the interface: colour, typography, radius, elevation, motion, components, stacking order and sound. ## Contact - [Message John](https://johnkappa.com/contact) - [LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnkappa/) — /in/johnkappa - [Twitter / X](https://twitter.com/johnkappa) — @johnkappa - [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/johnkappa/) — @johnkappa - [Behance](https://www.behance.net/JohnKappa) — /JohnKappa ## Questions ### Who is John Kappa? A product designer and builder based in Melbourne, Australia, with over twenty years across branding, UX and web design. He now works hands-on with AI — building tools and products rather than only designing them — and is currently a Lead Product Designer and AI specialist. ### What is KAPPA OS? John Kappa's portfolio, built as a miniature desktop operating system that runs in the browser. Rather than scrolling a page you boot into a desktop: open windows, drag files between folders, play music, run a terminal, browse photographs, change the wallpaper. The work is filed on the desktop the way work is filed on a real machine. ### What can you do in KAPPA OS? Open, move and resize windows; rename files and drag them between folders; use the Trash, Put Back and undo; search with Spotlight; read project case studies; browse photography as a WebGL wall or dome; play music in a skeuomorphic tape deck; run commands in a terminal; visit other sites in a period browser; strike a certificate plate for any name; play a game; set the wallpaper, theme and accent; and leave it alone long enough to reach a screensaver. ### Is John Kappa available for work? Yes. He is open to collaborators and to work that involves building something real — problems that are genuinely hard, approached from an unconventional angle. The contact card is at https://kappa-os.com/contact. ### What is KAPPA OS built with? Next.js with the App Router, React, TypeScript and Tailwind CSS. The photography wall and dome are WebGL, by way of three.js. Every icon is an SVG path or CSS and every sound is synthesised at runtime — there are no image or audio assets in the interface itself.
